On August 1st, 2006, the old assembly hall – the heart of the monastery - collapsed after unusually heavy rainfalls. Many religious objects and musical instruments were destroyed, among them all the clay statues. These had been made according to the wishes of the 16th Karmapa in order to protect Ladakh from dangers and conflicts. An irreplaceable loss.

Reconstruction

However, the assembly hall itself can be replaced. It is planned to build this with more durable materials and to include within the building special protector and Tara rooms. On the upper floor of the new assembly hall there is planned an apartment for the head of the Karma Kagyu lineage, as well as rooms for other high lamas.
