Ladakh is a mountainous desert in northwest India, where Buddhism has flourished for c. 2000 years despite harsh climatic conditions. Monasteries have always been centers of learning, and even nowadays they often are the only place for basic education in remote valleys. Karma Drubgyud Choeling (KDC) is located about 9 kilometers from Leh - the capital of Ladakh – in the broad Indus valley, opposite the residence of the Dalai Lama. The road to Manali on the other side of the Himalayas leaves through the string of Tibetan settlements known as Choglamsar. The monastery was founded by and is the seat of the Chime Rinpoches.
